As a child, I had always tried to comfort my mother whenever she was lonely, and I still do so, but she told me that the feeling of loneliness is a more terrible thing than anything else. I believe that at that moment the doorkeeper experienced a terrible loneliness. It is the gleam of grief and longing that is reflected in the eyes of this young girl. The doorkeeper smiles at her and, when she returns the smile, the doorkeeper's gaze is filled with a dark, sad longing. At the top of the stairs, she meets the girl who had entered earlier. The door closes behind her and the doorkeeper has not yet gone to bed. In the fourth part, written some years later, the widow leaves the house.
